A little information on original prints, and how they are different from commercially produced prints (reproductions).

In simple terms, a traditional original print is made this way:

1. The artist creates (by scratching or cutting) an image on a plate (metal, wood, lino, stone, plastic, cardboard... any surface).

2. Then the artist inks it by hand.

3. The inked plate with a sheet of paper on it is put under some source of pressure (printing press, garden roller, palms of hands, steam roller... anything)

4. Under the pressure, ink from the plate is transferred to the paper. The paper is pulled from the plate, and there it is - the original print!

Compare this with the way a commercial print is prepared:

1. An artwork is photographed or scanned.

2. The image is mechanically transferred onto a plate (limestone, metal or plastic plate covered in photosensitive emulsion)

3. The plate is installed in a printing press, where rollers ink it up, the ink is offset on to the rubber drum, and from it onto the paper. Once started, this process may produce hundreds of prints.

A giclee print is an inkjet print of high quality. Often giclee pints are sold as limited editions, numbered and signed. Sometimes the artist may add a few strokes of paint or transparent acrylic paste to the image to give it a more "handmade" look.

An artistic digital print is another variation of original print. As the medium is very new, there are various opinions on its definition.
